Steps to Take to Prevent Car Dents During Winter Months

by | Nov 12, 2016 | Dent tips

A dented vehicle is something most people don’t want to deal with throughout the year, especially during the colder months of winter. Not only do dings and scratches affect the trade in value of your car, they also lead to more substantial damage if not addressed right away. If you’re known to park in places where dents are common, there are some things you can do to protect your vehicle. Get more return out of your investment by having a vehicle that not only drives good but looks good, too.

Keep Dents and Dings from Ruining Your Day

A minor dent can still cause rust and corrosion to spread. Angie’s List gives pointers on how to find a reputable repair shop to take care of the problem for you. One thing that the website states is that smaller businesses take greater care in providing quality workmanship. Keep this in mind when shopping for estimates.

Here are some of the steps you should take to prevent car dents during the winter months of the year:

  • Plan your route before you leave. Stick to main roads that have been cleared and de-iced by snow plows and salt trucks. The likelihood of you having an accident that causes body damage to your vehicle is minimal when you take well-traveled routes versus backroads and small lane highways.
  • Make sure your tires have good tread. You’ll want your tires to grip the roadway well. You don’t want to slide around on the ice and cause an accident. Many people slam into metal barriers, road signs, and lamp posts because their tires aren’t ready for winter conditions. This causes unnecessary damage in the form of dents, dings, and scrapes on a car.
  • Properly de-ice your vehicle. By doing so, you remove build-up and prevent dings and dents from occurring while scraping huge chunks of ice off your car. Shovels are notoriously bad for the body of vehicles. Do what you can to keep your car ice-free. If you have a garage or carport, make sure to use it!
  • Remove snow from the top of your car. This keeps blocks of snow from crashing down and causing damage to your vehicle. Chunks of ice are extremely sharp and do their part to beat up your car. Make sure to brush soft snow from the roof, hood, and trunk of your vehicle.
  • If you start to skid, refrain from slamming onto the brakes. This prevents you from running into things that could potentially hurt you, other motorists and pedestrians, and damage your vehicle. Even if you and other people are okay, your vehicle might not be. Don’t slam your brakes. Instead, ease into the skid and decelerate. You may still hit something but you won’t have the impact you’d have going at accelerated speeds.
  • Let others know that you’re on the road by using your fog lights. Doing this alerts other motorists that you’re on the road with them so they don’t hit you or hurt your car. It keeps your vehicle up and running not damaged or inoperable because of an icy roadway. You don’t know how many accidents occur because people weren’t mindful enough to turn on their fog lights and let other motorists see them.

Avoid fender benders and other mishaps on the road by tending to your vehicle before inclement weather strikes. When the streets and highways get icy and covered with snow, accidents increase. You don’t want to spend all of your hard-earned money repairing your vehicle, do you?

Maintain the Blue Book Value of Your Vehicle by Keeping It in Excellent Condition

Reduce the number of dents your car receives during the winter by following these simple tips. They take little time out of your schedule and prevent further depreciation to your vehicle. Prevent costly repairs from costing you a fortune. In a matter of minutes, you can protect your car from dents in colder weather months by applying the tips listed above.
